About Us

Recognized as the cradle of Islamic civilization in the Philippines, Simunul is the seat of Islam’s oldest mosque in the Philippines, the Sheik Karim- ul Makhdum Mosque which was built in 1380 AD. This paved the way for the Islamization of the other regions in Mindanao and the establishments of the Sultanate of Sulu, Maguindanao and Lanao.

The name Simunul is derived from an Arab words “Ismu” which means “My Name” and “Nur” meaning light. Jointly Ismu and Nur became Simunul meaning “My Name is Light”.

Simunul was once one of the most progressive and populous principalities during the Sultanate of Sulu. It was governed by succession of PANGLIMAS or Local Chief Executive who were appointed by the Sultan of Sulu.

During the American regime, Simunul became a district or presidency, under the department of the Moro province. Its local Chief Executive was called President. The same local government structure was maintained during the Japanese occupation and the local chief executive appointed
by Japanese official.

Simunul became a Municipality by virtue of EO 355 dated July I, 1958. The first local election was held the following year.

Since its creation in 1958 Simunul had nine chief executives, three of them were appointed mayors. The incumbent local Chief Executive is Hon. Wasilah T. Abdurahman. Under her stewardship she envisions Simunul to become a premier tourism destination with a progressive fishery industry.
